The idea for Barrie Animal Hospital was conceived and

developed from 1975 to 1978 while working in another

veterinary clinic in Barrie. The floor plan was developed

incorporating the ideas of several American hospitals that

had won design awards.  The hospital uses approximately

4000 square feet of the building which is just over 7000

square feet in total.  The building was constructed by

Bertram Bros., a company with a record spanning almost

100 years in the Barrie area.  The site on Dunlop St. was

chosen after looking at many locations due to its close

proximity to the Highway 400 exchange at Dunlop St. and

the fact that Dunlop St. is the main street of downtown Barrie.

Shortly after receiving this building permit dreams of Barrie Animal Hospital began to become reality

Dunlop St. sure was different in 1978...look at all those trees!

A second story was added to the building to provide

accommodations which enabled close monitoring

of animals.  At the present time a technician lives

over the clinic to again allow for monitoring of

animals when necessary.

The official opening date was July 07, 1979 with a

staff of (1) veterinarian, (1) technician and

(1) receptionist / groomer.  In 2004 we now employ

(2) veterinarians, (2) technicians, (3) receptionists,

(2) groomers and (1) office manager.

Over it's history Barrie Animal Hospital has

hosted many groups on tours such as cubs,

scouts and brownies.  Barrie Animal Hospital

has also been involved in the co-op programs of

the local high schools for more than eighteen

years.

Barrie Animal Hospital has a history of working

with the local law enforcement agencies and

looks after the working dogs for the Ontario

Provincial Police, Ministry of Natural Resources

and the Barrie Police Force.  Barrie Animal Hospital

also has a long established history of assisting animals

in need of care at the OSPCA - Barrie branch.

The brick work continues as the second storey is added.....Barrie Animal Hospital had been born!

As Barrie Animal Hospital celebrates 30 years at the same location we are always looking

for new and better ways to work with our patients and their owners.

Special thanks to my friends Marty & Jack who helped throughout

the construction of the clinic and were (and still are) the best friends

anyone could ask for.
